Who Owns Corelle?

Corning Glass Works began manufacturing its Corelle Livingware line, which includes classics like Winter Frost, Butterfly Gold, Spring Blossom Green, Snowflake Blue, and Old Town Blue, in the 1970s.

Some designs were discontinued after Corning sold the brand to Corelle Brands. One of these was the iconic Butterfly Gold, with its unique flower design flanked by butterflies on both sides.

Other designs are also available in limited editions, including Nature's Bounty, Renaissance, and Medallion patterns. This is another reason why the Corelle pieces you may be looking for are hard to find.

In 2019, Corelle Brands merged with Instant Brands, LLC.  Since then, the company has concentrated on online shopping rather than retail stores. The retail store in Corning, New York, closed on January 31, 2022.

This does not mean that Corelle products are not available anymore. It has invested in its facilities and continues to make the products available in its existing store across America and website.

Are Corelle Dishes Unbreakable?

Corelle dinnerware is durable because of the unique material used. It is made with Vitrelle, a non-porous glass intended for television screens.

Glass is still breakable, right? But the process of using Vitrelle involves laminating three layers of glass. This makes the product durable for everyday wear and tear.

With that in mind, the Corelle dishes are still breakable. The dishware must be handled carefully so that it will be used for years to come.

Why Do People Use Corelle?

Corelle continues to be a favorite brand in many households for various reasons. It is a go-to brand for plates, bowls, and mugs in daily meals. Some of the older, unique patterns have become collectibles.

Durable and Long-lasting

Corelle dinnerware is a staple in many households and even in the food service industry. It is the preferred brand because it is durable and long-lasting.

Unlike other dinnerware brands, Corelle is highly resistant to chipping and cracking, making it a popular brand of choice. The dishes can withstand years of use, and the colored patterns do not fade

Corelle dinnerware is also lightweight. The plates can be stacked together and carried in one go without heavy lifting.

Versatility

The plates are not just great for use during meal time. They are safe for use in a microwave, a conventional oven, or a convection oven. You do not need to worry about damaging the dinnerware when warming, reheating, or baking with them. The products are dishwasher safe as well.

Beautiful Plate Patterns

If you prefer the classic all-white plates, Corelle’s Winter Frost line is a timeless choice. But they also offer white plates with colored trim to break the monotony of white.

You can find sets with geometric or floral designs which are conversation starters during mealtime. These designs come in different colors as well that stand out on the plates' white or cream backgrounds.

To add more choices to the line, Corelle added square plates with beautiful designs, too. These were designed by Studio Levien, a renowned London design firm.

The square plates are not only aesthetically appealing but also functional. They are easy to handle and stack neatly to save space.

Warranty

The company extends its customer support with a guarantee of the quality of its products. It will replace products or accessories within certain limitations.

Any defect due to manufacturing is covered by a one- to three-year warranty. Also, the warranty covers cracks, chips, breaks, or permanent stains that occur under normal household use. The warranty runs for one year from the date of purchase.

Normal household use includes preparation, serving, and cleaning up after meals. The warranty does not cover damages that occur during moving, storage, camping, or commercial use.

Why Are There Stains On My Corelle Plates?

Years of use of Corelle can show wear and tear. You may see gray lines or browning edges on the plates, bowls, and mugs.

Rust Stains

The metal grille in your dishwasher can cause Corelle dinnerware to develop brown edges. Rust forms when the grille starts to lose its vinyl protection. This can transfer to your dishes and result in a brownish color on your dinnerware.

The same can happen if you use a metal drying rack for hand-washed dishes. You should use the metal rack when you see that it is starting to rust.

In addition, tea and coffee can leave stains on mugs. Water with high iron content can cause staining as well.

You can remove rust and liquid stains with a nonabrasive dishwashing cleaner.  Follow these steps:

  1. Pour 1 teaspoon of liquid nonabrasive dish soap on the dishware.
  2. Lightly rub it with a sponge around the brown edges.
  3. Wash the dishware and check for any visible stains.
  4. Repeat the steps if there is still a rust stain.
  5. Wash thoroughly and allow to dry.

Gray Lines

Thin gray lines can appear on the Corelle plates as well. The constant friction of spoons, forks, and other metal cutleries on the dishware is the cause of the problem. Fortunately, the removal of metal stains is possible.

They won't disappear when run through a dishwasher, though. You can try using a nonabrasive cleaner made to remove rust stains. Baking soda will also do the trick without damaging your plates.

Here's how to use baking soda to clean your plates:

  1. Mix 2 parts baking soda with 1 part water to form a paste.
  2. Use a soft nylon pad to apply the paste to the plate.
  3. Scrub the plate and rinse it thoroughly.
  4. Allow it to dry before storage.

Repeat this process several times, depending on the gravity of the gray lines.

How To Care for Your Corelle

Here are some ways to make your Corelle dinnerware last:

  1. Any direct heat source such as a gas, electric or ceramic stovetop is not advisable for heating food with Corelle plates. This includes broilers and toaster ovens.
  2. Sudden temperature changes can cause the dinnerware to break or shatter. Do not place a cold plate from the refrigerator straight into a hot oven as this can break. Do not add cold liquid to a hot dish.
  3. Do not heat an empty Corelle plate in a microwave. Add liquid to the bottom of the dish before heating any dish.
  4. You should not put popcorn bags or food with special wrapping in Corelle plates or bowls. These heat rapidly and can cause the dishware to break.
  5.  Do not clean the dinnerware with abrasive cleaners and steel wool. These can cause scratches on the surface. Soak the plates in warm water mixed with dishwashing soap for hard-to-remove food.
  6. Do not use the plates as a chopping board. Serrated knives used to cut up food ingredients on the plate can scratch the surface.
  7. Once damaged, do not use or repair Corelle products, as these can break without any warning.

To Wrap Things Up
