What The Characters In A KitchenAid Dishwasher Serial Number Mean

The serial number on a KitchenAid appliance is a nine-character code. It is on a label affixed to the appliance, accompanied by the model number.

Whether you are looking at the serial number for a dishwasher, mixer, or refrigerator, the serial number is decoded the same way. Let's look at what each character means so that you can decipher some information about your KitchenAid appliance.

The First Character In The Serial Number

The first character in the serial number will represent where the appliance was produced. This will almost always be a letter of the alphabet if the serial number belongs to a KitchenAid product.

That first letter will correspond with which manufacturing plant produced the appliance. If that character is "W," then it means that it was factory W that built it.

To find out where factory "W" is located, you would need to contact KitchenAid directly.

The Second, Third, And Fourth Characters In The Serial Number

The next set of numbers will tell you the date your appliance was manufactured. The second character will be a letter. This letter corresponds with a year. Beginning with the year 1999, the letter J forward was used to tell the date.

So, if the second character in your KitchenAid dishwasher's serial number is "R," then your appliance was made in the year 2007.

Look at the third and fourth characters. These will be numeric digits. These digits will correspond with the week during the calendar year that the appliance was manufactured. For example, if the third and fourth characters are 19, then your dishwasher was built during the 19th week of the year.

Characters Five Through Nine

The final set of numbers is the remaining five digits. These numbers will be unique to your appliance. They represent the appliance ID. Just like with the VIN of a motor vehicle, you will have a unique set of characters that are issued to one unit from each plant on the given year and week of manufacture.

Where Is The Serial Number Located On A KitchenAid Dishwasher?

We now know what the serial number on a KitchenAid dishwasher means. But before you can decode the serial number, you'll first need to locate it. Thankfully, doing this is pretty simple.

KitchenAid dishwashers will have their serial numbers inside of the appliance. Open the door of the unit, and you'll see a sticker with both the serial number and model number on it.

How Long Will A KitchenAid Dishwasher Last?

The name KitchenAid is synonymous with higher-end quality appliances. These come at a premium price when compared to other models on the market. With a premium name and price should come longevity.

How Old Is KitchenAid?

The KitchenAid brand has been around for a long time. This home appliance giant has been a part of households for over a century now, equipping kitchens with the appliances they need to make home life a lot more convenient.

The brand began in 1919 and has been going strong ever since. Aside from dishwashers, you can find virtually every type of kitchen appliance from this brand. Refrigerators, mixers, microwaves, cooktops, and ovens are just part of what KitchenAid offers in its diverse lineup of products.

The name KitchenAid is synonymous with high-quality appliances. These are built to last!

How Long Do Other Dishwashers Last?

Dishwashers give a great amount of convenience to homeowners. The number of dishes they can clean in one cycle is a giant timesaver. They can eliminate hours and hours of work for a person every week and do a better job and cleaning and sanitizing than handwashing will ever do.

These handy appliances do not last forever, though. They will need a bit of maintenance to keep them going, but even with the best treatment and maintenance regimen, there will be a time when you will have to replace your dishwasher.

Depending on the brand, you can expect a dishwasher to last between seven and 12 years. The quality of the water and how the appliance is treated will help determine how long you can expect a dishwasher to stay operating.

Is It Worth It To Fix A Dishwasher?

If there is an issue with any home appliance, there is usually a way a technician or repairman can get them operational again. But these folks don't work for free. This might make you question whether or not paying for repairs is worth the cost.

Generally, if the appliance is still under any sort of warranty, then the repairs will be worth any out-of-pocket costs you might have to pay. After a time, you might have to pay for the labor only while the manufacturer covers the parts. This will usually work out in your favor.

But when parts and labor are both out of warranty coverage, you should consider your options carefully. If the appliance is less than five years old, it might be well worth it to get a repair done as long as the repairman does not identify anything else problematic with the unit.

If a unit that's a few years old needs repairs for under $100, it would probably be worth it to have it repaired.

But if your dishwasher is more than a decade old, it's almost always better to replace your malfunctioning unit with a brand-new one. The odds are good that whatever needs repair is a sign of other needed repairs to come.

  1. This means absolutely nothing to me as to the age of my dishwasher. I have the tag of the unit I just replaced, more so for plumbing concerns. I have the model number and serial number. My previous tech guy (who has retired) gave me a theoretical year but I want to verify it. Where do I look to verify the age?
