No matter which method you choose to steam your broccoli, it needs to be prepped beforehand. With just two steps, broccoli prep is extremely easy -just clean and cut. Simply rinse the broccoli with water and pat dry. Once your broccoli is cleaned, cut it into florets. Be sure to keep all the pieces around the same size to ensure even cooking.
How to Steam Broccoli with a Colander/Steamer Basket:
- Place the cleaned and cut broccoli into your colander basket.
- Fill a pot with about 1” water and bring it to a boil.
- Carefully place your colander basket inside the pot.
- Reduce the heat to medium-high.
- Cook until the desired doneness is achieved.
NOTE: If you like your vegetables cooked al-dente, steam for 3 to 5 minutes. If you prefer your broccoli on the softer side, cook for 5 to 7 minutes, checking periodically so as not to overcook.
When done, remove the steamer basket or colander from the pot and discard the water into the sink. Be mindful of where you place the steamer basket as it will be very hot. Serve immediately, and enjoy!

How to Steam Broccoli without a Colander:
- Rinse your broccoli and cut it into florets.
- Fill a pot with about 1/2” of water.
- Bring the pot of water to a rolling boil.
- Carefully place your cleaned and cut broccoli inside the pot and cover with a lid.
- Reduce the heat to medium-high and cook for about 3 to 5 minutes.
- Once done, pour the pot over a strainer in the sink to sift out the water.
- Optional Step: Run cool water over the strained cooked broccoli to stop the cooking process. If your broccoli is already on the softer side, you may want to take this step to prevent overcooking.
